For those who might be interested in the 'tower' in the background, it is in fact nothing more exciting than an electricity Pylon. They straddle Upton Heath like gigantic steel monsters. Below is a picture that shows that
I got this gorgous picture of the new foal today, but what you can't see is Pickles head down on paws, back legs up, typical "come and play" stance. The little foal looked as if it was really interested, but Mum said "No!"...
Another surprise on the Heath today, 2 new ponies looking shiny and well kept. Both I note are geldings.
Wouldn't do to have 3 stallions on the Heath with 3 Mares. that would be trouble indeed.
I found out today from one of the Heath Rangers, just how the two new ponies happen to be on the Heath.
Apparantly they are both rescue ponies. Both found on the same property, owned by a man who sadly was both ill and impoverished. Sad but it happens. He loved his animals and tried for a long time I am told. There is no excuse for the kind of neglect these ponies suffered, lack of food and vet care. This man eventually called for help, but both ponies by that time were in a dreadful state with sores and very bad hoof problems....At one time, they had been ridden regularly. .......Neither of them can ever be ridden again.I must add, although neglected badly they were never beaten and remained docile and friendly
BUT....lookee now, still a bit thin but shiny and well cared for and they will continue to be on the Heath where all the animals receive regular check ups and all their needs are catered for. I really do believe these new comers will be very happy. Today we found them completely at home with the other ponies and being entertained beautifully by the new foal.
Walking on the Heath today, the temperature and the sunshine, belie the fact that it is the 12th October. I came particularly to see how much the new foal has grown in the months since she was born on the 14th July. As you can see from the pictures below. our little filly has grown a pace and is now sporting her shaggy winter coat. So used to humans is she, that she came quite readily to me, and was completely at ease with Pickles and Benji.
And just for fun, the steer and the cow that share the Heath with the ponies
